Automotive Engineering Services

Corus plays an important part in helping the automotive industry to exploit the use of metals in car design and engineering as well as in manufacture.

This goes beyond continuous development in the properties of the company’s metals. It involves working closely with designers and engineers in the automotive industry by offering customer technical support and consultative services.

A focus for this work is Corus Automotive Engineering. This group employs a 29-strong team of design and engineering specialists recruited directly from the automotive industry.
Corus is involved from the earliest concept stages of the vehicle development process right through series production, giving support to new and ongoing vehicle programmes.

The company helps automotive designers and engineers in many ways. For example, Corus develops tailored specifications for a particular application and gives guidance on how to use the company’s products to achieve the best possible performance. This includes expertise in processing technologies such as hydroforming of tubular blanks (through Corus Hyfo).

All work is backed by research and development as well as experience on some of the latest processing equipment. Corus Automotive Engineering also used knowledge-based engineering systems to simulate material performance for analysis and evaluation. Such systems increase the speed and development of the product development process. Finite element analysis available through the group’ consultancy services can help designers and engineers to see how fabrication will affect metals and how components and structures will perform. Computer modelling also includes crash analysis.

Collaborative projects with manufacturers and component suppliers are undertaken in strict confidence and have produced solutions that address fundamental automotive industry issues such as safety, reduced emissions through ‘light weighting’ and integrations of components, and reduced costs through greater efficiency.
