A critical aspect of manufacturing feasibility estimation is the estimation of the forming pressure required to produce the component. The forming pressure is dependant on the material properties, the tube wall thickness, the sectional elongation and the minimum fillet radius to be formed. The calculator provides an approximate analytical method for estimating the forming pressure for a given set of inputs. The graphs illustrate some of the key relationships. The most significant features to note are the significant increase in pressure as the ratio of fillet radius to wall thickness (r/t) decreases below 3 and the relative constancy in pressure for r/t values greater than 5. Also changes in n value and maximum elongation have only minor effects on forming pressure. The effect of varying maximum elongation is important since it implies that mass savings, achieved by reducing the tube diameter and hence increasing maximum elongation, do not have a significant effect on forming pressure. | |
