Corus & Wigpool supply chain partnership helps drive Triumphs continued success
  • Collaboration sees development of new grade of steel
  • New grade helps improve component performance and reduce manufacturing costs
  • Supply chain success helps Triumph stay ahead of competition

A successful supply chain partnership between Corus and Wigpool Ltd, for the development and supply of high quality precision machined components, is helping Triumph, one of the world’s oldest and most famous names in motorcycles, stay ahead of competitors.

Growing pressure from Japanese and American competitors coupled with increased consumer demand for better quality products has led Triumph, the wholly owned British manufacturer based in Hinckley, Leicestershire UK, to turn to Corus and Wigpool Ltd for help in ensuring that its increasing demand for high specification materials and components are met.

The supply chain partnership has seen Corus, the international steel company, working closely with Wigpool Ltd, one of the UK’s leading contract machinists, to help them select the most appropriate grade of steel for their manufacturing process, with the ultimate aim of improving the performance of key components whilst helping to reduce costs.   As a result, Corus Engineering Steels, based in Rotherham, introduced its Hitenspeed range of steel grades for evaluation.  The Hitenspeed grades are a range of easily machined, high tensile steels designed to improve the manufacturing process.  After detailed processing and evaluation, a grade called Hitenspeed 65 was deemed to offer the most benefits to Wigpool.

Lee Triscornia, Buyer for Triumph, comments: “Getting material selection right plays a key part in our product development and helps ensure that we continue building unique motorcycles that are distinctive in looks, design and importantly performance.  The combination of Corus’ material expertise and Wigpool’s ability to manufacture high performance, cost effective components allows us to produce motorcycles that offer a great riding experience to our customers and helps us succeed in a competitive market.”

Vaughan Harry, Managing Director of Wigpool Ltd, who produce thousands of different components each year for the entire Triumph range said: “Corus’ Hitenspeed 65 steel delivers real improvements and machines up to three times faster than other grades with no reduction in high strength properties.   We have also seen huge improvements in the length of machine tool life thanks to Hitenspeed which has reduced the need for repair or replacement and therefore manufacturing downtime and costs.  Corus’ Hitenspeed 65 has helped us to produce and deliver a better quality component to Triumph and importantly at a more competitive price.”

Lee Triscornia from Triumph adds: “Consistency of supply is also crucial.   We produce a motorcycle every two minutes and need to have complete confidence that components reach our state-of-art manufacturing plant on time, every time.  The successful partnership between Wigpool and Corus gives us this confidence.”
