Corus supports ‘Best Vehicle Design Award’ at Coventry University Automotive MA Design Show
02 Dec 2005
Jean-Michel Raad for his design concept The Moov!! was awarded the ‘Best Vehicle Design’ accolade in the Corus sponsored ‘15’, a private view of the Coventry University MA Automotive Design Show held on Thursday 01 December 2005 at the Coventry Transport Museum. The winning design was selected from a line-up of fifteen international students by a distinguished judging panel, which included David Godber, General Manager of Nissan Design Europe and Gerry McGovern, Advanced Design Director, Land Rover.
Jon King, director of Corus Automotive and chair of the judging panel, said: “All design starts with humans. Jean-Michel Raad set high goals for a very demanding project and achieved them all. Everything looked like it would work and the concept has huge potential for real applications.”
Gerry McGovern added: “The Moov!! was everything an MA project should be about, including the presentation – pure passion, innovation and fantastic execution.”
David Godber continued: “It was an astounding design project, wholly from within. A personification of the individual supported by a tremendous presentation.”
Chris Johnson, Head of Industrial Design, Coventry University added: “The MA Design Show is a great way to end what has been another very successful year for Coventry, not only did three of our design students win the opportunity of work experience within, Ferrari or Pininfarina for their winning design the “Fiorano” concept, but the F-Zero group concept, was voted the best design by readers of, The Sunday Times, and was also voted the best design on the official Ferrari website. Twenty three thousand people took part in the vote and the, Coventry car won with a considerable margin over the rival concepts!”
Second prize at ‘15’ was awarded to Christopher Lavelanet for his “Future New York City Taxi”.
Jon King, chairman of the judging panel said: “He knew the market and had done the research with all stakeholders considered and he was true to the brief, demonstrating a modern interpretation of the 5th Avenue carriage drive.”
David Godber added: “This design can take the lounge concept to a new level and would put stretched limos out of business!”
The third prize went to Alexis Julian Waterson for his “Space, Form and Structure” design. The design impressed the judges for deriving the form from modern art, designing his concept from the inside out with great focus on structure, imbuing a feeling of safety in a city car and the successful execution of a 2-plus-1. Roger Bishop, Editorial Director of European Automotive Design, commented: “I was particularly impressed by Alexis’s considered alternative drivetrain for a city car and his work towards packaging this logically.”
Sponsorship of the Coventry University Automotive MA Design Show, now in its eighth consecutive year, forms part of Corus’ work in bridging the gap between advanced metal engineering and leading edge product design.
Jon King concluded: “By partnering an institute at the forefront of innovation in European automotive design, Corus can create a platform to better understand the needs and wants of young designers, which can impact the future material solutions being developed within the company.”
