Corus aluminium for new Morgan sports car
22 Jun 2001
Corus is playing a role in the success of the acclaimed Morgan Aero 8, the first new model which has been introduced by Morgan Motor Company, manufacturer of classically styled sports cars, since the 1960s.
The new Aero 8 is the first aluminium intensive vehicle to be produced in Europe and uses both aluminium sheet and extrusions supplied by Corus. It is being hand built at Morgan’s facility in Malvern Link, Worcestershire, where the latest technology is combined with the traditional methods for which the company is famous.
The bonnet, doors, back and side panels are manufactured from sheet aluminium produced by Corus in Duffel, Belgium. It also supplies the bespoke aluminium extrusions that are used to produce the bearing housings and key structural components. These extrusions were developed by the technical team at Corus Aluminium Extrusions in Duffel, who worked closely with the design team at Morgan from the development phase of the new model. Members of the Corus technical team visited Morgan’s facility to provide materials engineering expertise to help optimise component design and performance.
Morgan has more than 550 advance orders for the Aero 8 which has received outstanding road test reports in all the major motoring magazines. Like the company’s other models, every Aero 8 will be built to order. Morgan currently builds 12 cars per week although this will increase with the new model.
The Aero 8 is not the first Morgan to feature Corus aluminium. The company, which has a waiting list of between four and five years for its vehicles, is a long established customer of Corus. Corus aluminium sheet is also used for body panels in the Morgan Plus Eight, Four Four and Four seater vehicles.
