Birmingham University gears-up to Formula Student with help from Corus
01 May 2002
For the fifth year in succession, Corus, the international metals company, is supporting Birmingham University’s entry into the Formula Student programme by supplying both its material knowledge and the high quality steel needed to build a number of key components for the team’s single seat race car.
Formula Student aims to give engineering students valuable project experience through designing and building a fully competitive racecar. The case-hardening steel alloy supplied by Corus Engineering Steels has been used by the University, one of the UK’s leading student race teams, to build a number of vital driveline components, including the differential, driveshafts and constant velocity joints, as well as parts of the suspension and steering system. The same material is widely used by professional race teams because of its high tensile strength.
Welcoming the support offered once again by Corus, Simon Bishop, University of Birmingham drivetrain engineer comments: “The cars we build are technically very advanced and are capable of achieving 0-60 mph in four seconds. The gears and driveshaft are some of the most highly stressed components in any race car. Getting the correct material for these components therefore is vital and Corus is always on hand to provide us not only with the high quality steel needed for these parts but also, importantly, technical advice.”
Commenting on the aims of competitions such as Formula Student to develop practical skills, Keith Grant, marketing manager, Corus Engineering Steels said: “We are delighted to be supporting Birmingham University team again this year. By making available our advanced materials, the students can design and build race cars that can compete at the highest level. Participants acquire additional skills and knowledge which helps deepen their understanding and the industry will benefit from graduates who have obtained real hands-on experience.”
Birmingham University is one of the country’s leading university race teams and competes in a number of events across both the UK and the United States. Formula Student takes place this year between 1-3 July at Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome proving ground near Leicester, and the results are assessed by some of the UK’s leading automotive engineers.
