Working with Xtrac Ltd, Corus developed a super-strong and weight-saving steel that has been pivotal in the production of Grand Prix-winning transmissions and gearboxes for Formula 1 vehicles.
The steel is of equivalent quality to that used in aerospace applications.
It therefore offers considerable strength-to-weight advantages for an application in which the slightest weight-saving can make the difference between winning and losing.
XVAR 1 is a case-hardening steel alloy comprising 3.5% nickel, chromium and molybdenum.
It enables Xtrac to manufacture transmission systems, driveshafts and gears offering repeatedly high performance under the extreme conditions of high-profile races
